Cookie information

Google Analytics 4, provided by Google, tells us how many people visit, which pages they read and whether they reached the enquiry form, so we can see what is useful and improve the website. The information it collects covers the pages visited and how visitors move through the site, approximate location (at region or city level, with IP addresses anonymised), device type, browser and the referral source that brought the visitor to the site. We never send your name, email address, telephone number or anything you type into a form to Google. Advertising features, ad personalisation and Google signals are switched off. Usage data is retained in the Google Analytics account for two months, then automatically deleted.

Declining analytics cookies does not affect normal use of the website: every page, free tool and the enquiry form works exactly the same either way.

Your choice is remembered on your own device using your browser’s local storage — an essential record that stays on your device and is not sent to us. You can change or withdraw your choice at any time using the “Cookie settings” link at the bottom of every page, which reopens the cookie message. If you withdraw consent after accepting, the Google Analytics cookies are removed and no further information is sent.

Google is the analytics service provider. Google may process this information internationally, including outside the UK and the EEA, under its stated safeguards and transfer mechanisms.

Some of the free tools on this site, for example the preparation checklists and the “next steps after an assessment” checklist, remember which boxes you have ticked so that your progress is still there if you close the page and come back.

That information is saved using your browser’s local storage. It stays on your own device, it is not a cookie, it is never sent to us, and we cannot see it. It contains only which items you ticked and which audience you chose, no name, no email address, no assessment information.

You can clear it at any time by clearing your browser’s site data for this website, or by using your browser in private/incognito mode.

This site links out to other organisations, local authority SEND Local Offers, awarding bodies, government services, professional bodies and charities. Those websites are independent of Defining Dyslexia and set their own cookies under their own policies. We suggest checking the cookie and privacy information on any site you visit from here.

Things this site does not do:

• no analytics of any kind unless you accept the cookie message;
• no advertising, remarketing or conversion tracking pixels;
• no social media tracking widgets;
• no embedded chat or heat-mapping tools;
• no profiling of visitors based on browsing behaviour.

You can control and delete cookies for any website through your browser settings. Most browsers let you block all cookies, block third-party cookies only, or delete stored data for a specific site. Blocking cookies will not stop this site working, because it does not rely on them.
